Who We Are

Hack4Dean working group community of developers creating content sharing web community tools to unify and empower Dr. Howard Dean's internet campaign for the presidency in 2004.

Howard Dean has energized citizens everywhere to organize, not only at the local and state levels but also by common interests (such as Students for Dean, Progressive Christians for Dean). The goal of hack4dean is to build the tools that will help connect the various strands of the grassroots into a co-ordinated voice.

Hack4Dean is not affiliated with the official Dean For America campaign.

Our connection with AmericansForDean

Hack4Dean is a working group of developers creating tools for Howard Dean's internet campaign. AmericansForDean will be the front face of the network we are building. Right now the same people are behind both sites so it is not easy to differentiate between the two, but as the network we are building emerges the roles and purposes of these distrinctly different orginizations will become more clear.

And About Our Name...

You might notice the work hack in our name. This might seem a bit alarming, but the phrase "hack" has been somewhat distorted; we would recommend looking up the definition here.

For many computing enthusiasts, a "hacker" is not a depraved seedy criminal, obsessed with breaking into private systems, vandalizing webspaces, and other juvenile acts. If it's not obvious yet, hack4dean does no such thing.

A hacker is a rogueish sort of architect and inventor: independent-minded, inventive, self-reliant. A hacker is someone who takes pleasure in finding creative and intelligent solutions to challenging problems. To hack at a problem is to find solution through trial, error, and occasional brilliant inspiration.

In many ways, the great luminary Ben Franklin was the archetypal American hacker. He took risks and got his hands dirty, and in the process built some wonderful stuff. We are proud to follow in those footsteps.
